Chapter One ” There’s a first time for everything”
Another night spent at home alone doing absolutely nothing. I can hear my mom downstairs calling my name, which can only mean one thing. I am in trouble. The best thing to do when my mother gets into one of her moods is to ignore her and hope that she will forget whatever she’s ranting on about. “ Sofia I know you can hear me, come down right now” Instead of listening to her I decided to browse the internet to pass the time. I ended up on a social networking website called connectU. ConnectU in a online dating website that my friend Ivy had told me about. Sitting in my room alone, I decided to check out the website and see what kind of people were on it. ” There’s a first time for everything” I thought to myself. I knew this was something that I have been wanting to try for a while but at the same time I was ashamed of it. Growing up as a Muslim woman, we never spoke about dating let alone online dating. If I wanted to try this, I would have to keep it to myself. I looked at my watch and noticed that it was already 7:00 pm. I really need to start my math homework. As much as I hate school, summer class allowed me to get out of the house more often. This way I was still able to see my friends and socialize. I spent the next few hours working on my homework but when 11:00 pm rolled around, I decided to browse the profiles listed on ConnectU. Some of these people were really creepy and others seemed really intriguing. After one hour of searching I decided to sign up. I filled out all the required fields and included a short bio. I even went as far as adding a picture hoping that no one I knew would be on this website. Right away I received a couple of e-mails that made me really uncomfortable. Two of them consisted of guys asking me for nude photos. Maybe this is not for me? An hour and a half later I received an email that caught my attention. The first thing I did was skim through his profile, it looked promising, I then proceeded to look through his pictures to confirm that he wasn’t fake. Right when I noticed his ethnicity, I knew this was going to be a problem.
E-mail from Carson Thompson
“ Hi, my name is Carson, I know you must receive a lot of messages on this website so I will keep this short. I would like to start off by saying that I am very intrigued by your profile, from reading what you wrote I feel like we have a lot in common. If you have the time, I would like to chat and get to know you better. Thanks, Carson.
That is the first e-mail that I have read from this dating website that did not make me cringe. At this point I got curious and decided to completely read his profile. “Single, college student, personal trainer.. not bad” I thought to myself, maybe this guy isn’t such a creep after all. I spent the next ten minutes crafting the perfect message and all I could come up with was “Thanks for the message, I read your profile and I also wouldn’t mind chatting. By the way, my name is Sofia”
That’s all I could think of, mind you its 1:30 am and I’m supposed to be working on my math homework instead of surfing the net.
Five minutes later Carson responded with a small bio of himself which included where he attends school, what kind of music and food he enjoys, his goals and ambitions. Everything he said was what I was looking for in a partner. So far, he is selling himself really well. We ended up messaging each other back and forth throughout the night. Around 5:20 am we decided to call it a night and promised that we would resume our conversation later that day. The last thing he said to me was
“ I hope this is not to forward but can I have your phone number?” I gave him my phone number and two minutes later received a text message saying “ It was nice to meet you Sofia, sweet dreams” At first I was worried about the fact that I just gave a stranger my phone number but for some reason, I felt like I could trust him.
Text message from Carson
I could barely sleep all morning, all I kept on thinking about was him. Would he text me? “Good morning Sofia, how did you sleep?” I have been waiting for this text all morning “well “ I replied “ How about you?” To tell you the truth I did not sleep one blink last night, all I kept on thinking about was how this boy could make me feel this way when we have only been speaking for a few hours. There was something about the way he wrote that made me feel like he cared about me already. He never used slang or improper grammar and at the end of every sentence he would include my name. We continued talking throughout the morning until I had to attend my summer class.
When I got home that day, my mother was cooking supper for me and my sister. I walked in said my hellos and headed straight to my bedroom. Let me tell you a little bit about me and my family. My name is Sofia, I am 24 years old and I am part of a very strict Islamic family that consists of my mother, two brothers and three sisters. Growing up we had it all, my dad was a wealthy man and treated my mother like a queen. When I was 5 years old, a war broke out in my home country Somalia. Before I knew it my mother packed our things and we were on a flight to Canada. Things did not go according to plan and instead we ended up in Spain where I lived for four years before moving to Canada. Once we moved here I quickly realized that my life was never going to be the same again and boy was I right.
